Volunteer

Want to volunteer for Towards Carfree Cities? Whether you’re able to take on a major organizing position or show up at a party to silkscreen t-shirts, there’s a role for you! Below is a partial list of volunteer opportunities. We’ll also be needing a large number of volunteers during the conference itself. To learn more, contact our volunteer coordinator.

Update: If you wish to help out during the conference, sign up here!

The first step for getting involved with Towards Carfree Cities is to join our email listserv here. Volunteer opportunities are regularly posted to this list, as well as conference updates and news about carfree issues.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Homestay hosts
Do you have a spare bedroom? A guest house? A sofa? Host one of our presenters or attendees from afar. Email heidi at groxie dot com for more information.
  • Program / Schedule Coordinators
Got an eye for detail, a flair for proofreading, and/or a talent for graphic design? Help develop both content and form of the conference program.
  • Fundraising Assistants
This could include any of the following: tracking sponsorship requests and income; work on grantwriting; letter-writing; fundraising and follow-up.
  • Media / Publicity Volunteers
Join our PR team. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or want to learn a valuable skill, we’d love to have you.
  • Bloggers
Help us keep our attendees informed about conference developments, profile conference speakers, and write stories or take pictures about carfree news and ideas.
  • Bookkeeper
We could use some very basic accounting help.
  • Travel Liaisons
You do not have to live in Portland to volunteer! Liaisons will contact attendees from one or more regions who are seeking sustainable options for travel to the conference, and help them coordinate with each other to travel together via train, bike, bus, boat, or carpool.
  • Activities assistants
Help coordinate events like a depaving project, mobile workshops, and the squaredance in the street. Tasks might include legwork for permits, scouting routes, making phone calls, and logistical planning.
  • Volunteer Party Coordinator
Help us throw an awesome party to thank all of our volunteers.
